FRAX™ is a tool developed by the World Health Organization to make estimates of fracture probability in postmenopausal women and older men using a combination of clinical risk factors with or without bone mineral density (BMD) measurements. For several historical reasons, the T-score and Z-score values provided by commercial DXA machines do not exactly correspond to those used for the FRAX™ calculations.
To address this problem, the "FRAX™ Patch" was created to calculate the T-score to use with FRAX™ from DXA BMD results. This downloadable program, developed by the Oregon Osteoporosis Center with the support of the National Osteoporosis Foundation and WHO Fracture Risk Task Force and input from the American DXA manufacturers, computes the appropriate femoral neck T-score to use in the FRAX™ calculator for men and women regardless of ethnicity.
For all patients measured on GE-Lunar, Hologic or Norland DXA machines, use the "FRAX™ Patch" by first selecting the brand of DXA machine the patient was measured on and then entering the femoral neck BMD value in units of g/cm². The T-score to use for the FRAX™ calculator is then provided.
System Requirements
The FRAX™ Patch program is platform-neutral and will run on most Windows, Mac, and Unix/Linux computers using the Java Runtime Environment. If your computer doesn't have Java installed, you can download it at www.java.com/getjava.
