The National Osteoporosis Foundation President, Dr. Ethel S. Siris, was honored with the 2007 Marianne J. Legato Gender-Specific Medicine Award. Ladies’ Home Journal honored Dr. Siris for her efforts as principal investigator of the National Osteoporosis Risk Assessment (NORA) study where which is helping Americans understand that osteoporosis affects men as well as women. The magazine recognized Dr. Siris for “leading the charge to draw attention to the disease.”

21 February 2006 New Department of Defense Research Grants Announced

For those interested in osteoporosis research, the Department of Defense (DOD) just announced Fiscal Year 2006 funding for the Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP). The PRMRP was established to provide support for military health-related research of clear scientific merit, including osteoporosis and bone-related diseases research. 10 January 2005 Medicare Now Offers "Welcome to Medicare Physical Exam"

New Medicare enrollees (after January 1, 2005) are eligible for a one-time preventive physical exam within the first six months of enrollment. If eligible, a bone mass measurement test may be included. Click here to order NOF's "Medicare Now Covers Bone Density Tests!" The Department of Defense (DoD) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program has issued an announcement for innovative research and development with specific goals and endpoints that include osteoporosis and bone related diseases research. 2 September 2004 Medicare Demonstration Program Expands to Include Second Medication for Osteoporosis
Medicare is implementing a demonstration program which will provide a special "bridge" benefit. This program will make approved drugs available to some beneficiaries before the new Medicare drug benefit becomes available in 2006. Click here for more information.
4 August 2004 NOF Responds to Calls Regarding Recent AP Article on Osteoporosis
On July 26th, the Associated Press released an article on trends in osteoporosis treatment, which was carried in newspapers across the country. Since the article appeared, NOF has received numerous calls from patients who believed the article revealed a link between three medications approved for osteoporosis (alendronate, risedronate and raloxifene) and heart problems, breast cancer and other health risks.

The article was referring to Women's Health Initiative, which found a link between estrogen therapy and increased risks for breast cancer and cardiovascular disease.

4 August 2004 Medicare to Extend Access to Certain Drugs for Beneficiaries with Serious Illnesses
Medicare patients who previously traveled to their health professional's office to receive medication may benefit from a new Medicare demonstration program for prescription drugs. Homebound osteoporosis patients previously eligible for injectable calcitonin may now be able to receive coverage for nasal calcitonin which they can take at home.
