National Osteoporosis Foundation Announces New President and Vice President and Welcomes New Members to the Board of Trustees

Washington, D.C. (August 18, 2008) – The National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) announces Robert R. Recker, M.D., M.A.C.P., F.A.C.E, as its new president as of July 17, 2008. Dr. Recker is a physician-scientist with more than 35 years of experience in laboratory and clinical research, teaching, patient care, and professional leadership. Dr. Recker succeeds Ethel S. Siris, M.D., who has completed a three-year term of distinguished service as president of NOF. Dr. Siris remains a member of the NOF Board of Trustees as immediate-past president. Additionally, NOF has elected Lawrence G. Raisz, M.D., as vice president.

Dr. Recker, a graduate of the Creighton University School of Medicine, is an internationally-recognized expert in the field of metabolic bone disease. He serves as director of the Creighton University Osteoporosis Research Center and holds the ranks of Master at the American College of Physicians and Fellow at the American College of Endocrinology. Dr. Recker served as the past governor of the Nebraska Chapter of the American College of Physicians and past president of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). He has authored 425 original papers, chapters and monographs that address calcium physiology, metabolic bone disease, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, adaptation of bone to loading and, more recently, the genetics of bone mass. Currently, he serves on the editorial boards of several medical journals, including Osteoporosis International and BONE.

“Dr. Recker has served as a member of the Board of Trustees for more than four years,” said Leo Schargorodski, executive director of NOF. “We welcome his experience, knowledge and leadership during his term of president of NOF.”

Lawrence G. Raisz, M.D., is currently a professor of medicine and the director of the University of Connecticut Center for Osteoporosis at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, Conn.  Dr. Raisz has been conducting clinical and basic research in osteoporosis and bone metabolism for more than 40 years. He was a founder and second president of ASBMR and the founding editor of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.
NOF also welcomes three new members to its Board of Trustees: Kenneth Saag, M.D., M.Sc., Ann C. Miller, M.D., and Bill Sipper.

Dr. Kenneth Saag is a professor of Medicine in the Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His current research focuses on the epidemiology of osteoporosis as well as methods to translate evidence into practice for osteoporosis. Dr. Saag received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, and his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago. He went on to earn a Master of Science degree in epidemiology from the University of Iowa.

Dr. Ann Miller has a range of experience in the osteoporosis and bone health industry. For nearly two years she served as executive director of Amgen, Inc. She lead their Global Marketing efforts and then she went on to head up the company’s North American Commercial Operations. Prior to that, Dr. Miller provided leadership at Merck & Co., Inc, serving as executive director of the company’s osteoporosis marketing division where she promoted new treatments for osteoporosis. Dr. Miller first completed her undergraduate education at Duke University and then went on to the Medical School at Duke University where she received her medical degree. Currently, she is a marketing consultant for Array Biopharma, Inc. in Boulder, Colorado.

Bill Sipper is an accomplished senior sales and marketing management executive with extensive experience in the food and beverage industry. In particular, when he served as director of national sales at Nantucket Nectars, the company saw an increase in sales from $3 million to $65 million in three years. Additionally, Sipper previously served as president and COO of Tear of the Clouds, a White Plains, N.Y-based philanthropic consumer products company, where he was able to reduce the company’s projected expenses by 37 percent. Currently, Sipper is a partner at Cascadia Consulting Group, one of the leading consumer products consulting firms.
